“The Good Place” Memes
Two years after the show-stopping season finale aired, we’re taking a look at our favorite The Good Place memes. Watch out for spoilers (duh). The protagonists often make bad decisions and are usually morally ambiguous at best (except Jason, we don’t really know what he is), yet you are charmed enough to want to root for them every step of the way. You don’t often come across shows that deal with the afterlife and yet manage to remain lighthearted and funny. When The Good Place first aired in 2016, it had aimed to do exactly that. The show has managed to strike a delicate balance between handling tough subject matters like grief, fractured families, and death while maintaining its top-notch sense of humor and intelligent lead characters.

Maya Rudolph’s portrayal of Judge Gen (yes, it is short for Hydrogen, in case you had forgotten) was nothing short of exemplary. It’s not a surprise this all-knowing judge would dislike humans so much, given our massive role in driving climate change and all. We assume that the pandemic has the same sentiments towards the earth and humanity.
Being Good? In This Economy?
Is ethical consumerism possible in this capitalistic society? We don’t know. It is a fantastic parallel however between Eleanor and her roommate.

Janet’s “Hi, I am broken,” will always be iconic. We loved seeing Janet flood Michael’s office with cacti which in turn had him turn red with rage.
This Is the Sad Place, Not the Good Place
Being positive is a tall order in and of itself. When there’s a global pandemic going around and most of the world is stuck in isolation, obtaining happiness often feels like an insurmountable task. While we certainly have our moments of positivity, we think Michael’s dialogue here is the aptest depiction of what we’re collectively feeling right now.

The Heart of “The Good Place”
At the core of it, The Good Place is an exploration of unlikely relationships, both platonic and romantic. The development of Chidi and Eleanor’s romance was equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking.
